A commentary on operamide and cardiotoxicity

چکیده
The Letter uncovers an issue which is increasingly relevant in Community Hospital practice. The authors have highlighted the following points with an interesting case and adequate referencing, but the points are relatively well reported and not novel. There has been a clearly documented increase in the number of reported cases of loperamide abuse and toxicity in the literature in recent years. There is a relatively clear established link between loperamide use and cardiotoxicity. The cardiotoxic effects more commonly reported include QTc prolongation and QRS interval prolongation with concomitant ventricular arrythmias. There has also been an increase in popular awareness regarding the abuse potential of loperamide which has entered the public domain. The increased abuse of loperamide may be related to the general trend of restricting prescriptions of controlled substances A few additional points that may be brought to the authors attention:

Protective Effect of Ephedra nebrodensis on Doxorubicin-Induced Cardiotoxicity in Rats
Doxorubicin (DOX) is an anthracycline antibiotic with broad spectrum anti-tumour activity. Its effectiveness has been limited by the occurrence of dose-related myocardial and bone marrow toxicity. As oxidative stress is the main factor in DOX-induced cardiotoxicity, we presumed that agents which enhance endogenous antioxidants can prevent DOX induced cardiotoxicity. Animals received either DOX ...
متن کاملOn the Benefit of Nanocurcumin on Aluminium Phosphide-induced Cardiotoxicity in a Rat Model
Objectives: Cardiotoxicity is considered the primary cause of death in aluminum phosphide (ALP)-poisoned cases. Curcumin, the active ingredient of turmeric, is a potent protective polyphenol compound against cardiac diseases including cardiotoxicity. This study aimed to examine the probable cardioprotection potential of nanocurcumin in a rat model of ALP-induced cardiotoxicity. Methods: T...
متن کاملProtective Effects of Lycopene and Tomato Extract Against Doxorubicin-Induced Cardiotoxicity
The protective effect of tomato extract and lycopene on acute doxorubicin-induced myocardial toxicity was evaluated in mice. Doxorubicin toxicity, induced by a single intraperitoneal injection (15 mg/kg), was revealed by elevated serum CPKMB and histopathological observations. Tomato extract (1.2 and 2.4 g/kg, i.p.) and lycopene (1.7 and 3.5 mg/kg, i.p.), prevented the rise in serum CPKM...
متن کاملPrevention from Doxorubicin Cardiotoxicity by Available Protective Agents in Iran
Doxorubicin, used in pediatric chemotherapy regimens, has cardiotoxic effects. Dexrazoxane is co-administrated with doxorubicin to prevent its cardiotoxicity. Here we have explored some alternative food or drugs to be used in absence of dexrazoxane since it’s not readily available in Iran at this time. Keywords: Pediatric, chemotherapy, doxorubicin, cardiotoxicity, dexrazoxane, Iran.
متن کاملAmeliorative Effect of Beraprost Sodium on Celecoxib Induced Cardiotoxicity in Rats
Selective COX-2 inhibitors are most widely used analgesic and anti-inflammatory drugs;however, its maximal use is highly associated with various serious abnormal cardiovascularevents. Beraprost sodium (BPS), prostacyclin analogue has been shown to vasodilatory, antiplatelates, anti-inflmmatory, and antioxidant activity. The objective of the present study wasto evaluate the effect of BPS on celec...
